Bruington Baptist Church, in King and Queen County, Virginia, was organized in 1790 by 150 members from Piscataway Church (now Mt. Zion) in Essex County. Dr. Robert Baylor Semple, distinguished minister and historian of Virginia Baptists, was its first pastor and served for forty-one years. He and his wife are both buried in the church cemetery.
The first sanctuary building was erected in 1791 and was built of wood, unplastered, without stoves or heating appliances of any kind, and without glass lights except a single window in the rear of the pulpit. The second sanctuary of brick was completed in 1823. The walls of the building cracked and became unsafe so a new building (our current worship space) was erected in 1851. The addition of Sunday school rooms and fellowship hall were added to the current worship space in 1957.
Three other Baptist churches were formed from the Bruington congregation over the years: St. Stephens (1842), Bethlehem (1871), and Mt. Zion (1870).
